The CNPA Foundation announces its 2009 Newspaper Internship Grants Program.

Up to eight $1,500 internship grants are available for students interested in careers with newspaper companies. The top three-placing internship winners will receive an additional $500.

The CNPA Foundation will also provide up to two $1,500 advertising and marketing internship grants.

Applications are accepted from full-time 3.0+ GPA sophomores, juniors or seniors pursuing newspaper journalism, advertising or marketing careers.  Each grant is awarded after the winner secures and begins an internship of six weeks or more at a CNPA-member newspaper, so start looking for an internship now.  (The Foundation’s internship grants require that students secure California newspaper internships on their own before they receive these grants.)

You’ll need transcripts, letters of recommendation and some good work samples.

In mid-November, the Foundation will identify finalists from applications submitted by the deadline. Finalists will be asked to attend a 30-minute interview with Foundation representatives. Travel expenses will be reimbursed. Upon successful completion of the interview, up to eight finalists will each receive a newsroom internship grant, and up to two will each receive an advertising and marketing internship grant, pending the start of their internship.

Winners of the CNPA Foundation’s 2008 internship grants worked at the Chico Enterprise-Record; The Fresno Bee; Pasadena Star-News; The Press-Enterprise, Riverside; The Sacramento Bee; The San Diego Union-Tribune and the Ventura County Star..

* Be a current undergraduate student (minimum 12 units).

* Maintain a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average.

* Work for the Los Angeles Loyolan in a leadership role.

* Complete a Los Angeles Loyolan Merit Scholarship application.

The following application is for the Fall 2008 scholarship. The total amount of the scholarship for this semester is $500.
The deadline for all application materials for this semester is August 26, 2008, at midnight Pacific time. All applications and related materials will not be returned. Please retain a copy for your records. Applications submitted without the required statement or story portfolio will not be considered for the Los Angeles Loyolan Merit Scholarship.

Application Statement Instructions

Please provide a brief statement of no more than 500 words about your past involvement in the Loyolan and your vision for what you would like to see the paper accomplish in the current semester.

Save your essay as a separate file and submit it with your application and story portfolio.

2008-09 Los Angeles Loyolan Merit Scholarship Story Portfolio Instructions

Please provide samples of no fewer than two and no more than four stories you have written for the newspaper that you feel best exemplify your work.

You can submit these samples by providing the url of the Loyolan Web page they are located or by providing pdf attachments of clips taken from the physical newspaper.

These story portfolio files should be submitted with your application and statement.

Criteria for selection will be determined by the Senior Vice President of Student Affairs or his or her designee.

This scholarship is specifically designed not to impact any other need- or merit-based aid a student may have obtained through the Loyola Marymount University Financial Aid office.

The awards competition is open to all part-time or full-time college students, including those in community colleges and in graduate programs.

All entries must be of work published or broadcast that helped to right a wrong; corrected an injustice; or promoted justice and fairness.

Award amount: $1,500 for the college student winner. The awards are presented at the annual Freedom Award banquet which will be held in Washington, DC. The winners will receive transportation to Washington, DC and hotel lodging to attend the banquet.

Awards are based on material published by a United States newspaper–in print or online–that appears daily, Sunday or at least once a week during the calendar year.

Preference will be given to work characterized by a high quality of writing and reporting.

1. For a distinguished example of meritorious public service by a newspaper though the use of its journalistic resources which, as well as reporting, may include editorials, cartoons, photographs and online material, a gold medal.

2. For a distinguished example of local reporting of breaking news, presented in print or online or both, Ten thoushand dollars ($10,000).

3. For a distinguished example of investigative reporting by an individual or team, presented as a single article or series, in print and online, Ten thousand dollars ($10,000).

4. For a distinguished example of explanatory reporting that illuminates a significant and complex subject, demonstrating mastery of the subject, lucid writing and clear presentation, in print and online, Ten thousand dollars ($10,000).

5. For a distinguished example of reporting on significant issues of local concern, demonstrating originality and community expertise, in print or in print and online, Ten thousand dollars ($10,000).

6. For a distinguished example of reporting on national affairs, in print or in print and online, Ten thousand dollars ($10,000).

7. For a distinguished example of reporting on international affairs, in print or in print and online, Ten thousand dollars ($10,000).

The Harry Chapin Media Awards, formerly the World Hunger Media Awards, were created in 1982 to encourage the media to “tell the story of hunger and poverty.” The Media Awards honor print and electronic media for their outstanding coverage that positively impacts hunger, poverty and self-reliance. The Media Awards also honor work that focuses on the causes of hunger and poverty and the forces creating self-reliance. This includes work on economic inequality and insecurity, unemployment, homelessness, domestic and international policies and their reform, community empowerment, sustainable development, food production, agriculture, nutrition and the struggle for land.
The Awards cover six media categories:

* Radio
* Photojournalism
* Books

NASW established the Science in Society awards to provide recognition — without subsidy from any professional or commercial interest — for investigative or interpretive reporting about the sciences and their impact for good and bad. NASW especially wants to encourage the kind of critical, probing article that would not receive an award from an interest group.

For material published or broadcast in books, periodicals (newspaper and magazine), and electronic media (radio, television, and the Internet) between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2008.

Deadline for submissions: Postmarked Feb. 1

Annually, NABJ awards more than $60,000 in scholarships to deserving students interested in pursuing careers in journalism. Scholarships are worth up to $25,000. Scholarships are open to any foreign or American born student, currently attending or entering an accredited four-year college/university in the U.S. or those who are candidates for graduate school.

Candidates may apply for the award by submitting up to three samples of published work accompanied by a one-page letter describing the articles and why they were chosen for submission. The samples of published work must have appeared in a campus publication.

Candidates for the award must have been undergraduate students at the time their articles were published. Applicants may be students in any country, but their submissions must be in English. Employees of The Chronicle and their families are ineligible.

The AYJW $2000 Journalism/English Studies Scholarship is for college level students enrolled in journalism or English programs. This year’s scholarship has been extended to include English as well as journalism majors. It is intended for undergraduate through PhD level students.

The deadline for application is May 31

Applications will be reviewed and recipients notified by July 1st.
