2008-09 Los Angeles Loyolan Merit Scholarship

The Department of Student Media and the Division of Student Affairs awards scholarships each fall and spring to one student pursuing an undergraduate degree at Loyola Marymount University who demonstrates a strong commitment to the Los Angeles Loyolan by serving the paper in a leadership role.
Before applying for the scholarship, please read the following eligibility requirements. All applicants must:

    * Be a current undergraduate student (minimum 12 units).
    * Maintain a minimum 3.0 overall grade-point average.
    * Work for the Los Angeles Loyolan in a leadership role.
    * Complete a Los Angeles Loyolan Merit Scholarship application.

The following application is for the Fall 2008 scholarship. The total amount of the scholarship for this semester is $500.
The deadline for all application materials for this semester is August 26, 2008, at midnight Pacific time. E-mail your completed application, your statement and your story portfolio to Director of Student Media Tom Nelson at tnelson@lmu.edu by midnight on August 26, 2008. All applications and related materials will not be returned. Please retain a copy for your records. Applications submitted without the required statement or story portfolio will not be considered for the Los Angeles Loyolan Merit Scholarship.

    How to apply:

    * Complete your statement following the parameters on Page 3.
    * Submit url links or pdf files of no fewer than two and no more than
    four stories you have written for the Los Angeles Loyolan. See Page
    3 for details.

Application Statement Instructions

Please provide a brief statement of no more than 500 words about your past involvement in the Loyolan and your vision for what you would like to see the paper accomplish in the current semester.

Save your essay as a separate file and submit it with your application and story portfolio.

2008-09 Los Angeles Loyolan Merit Scholarship Story Portfolio Instructions

Please provide samples of no fewer than two and no more than four stories you have written for the newspaper that you feel best exemplify your work.

You can submit these samples by providing the url of the Loyolan Web page they are located or by providing pdf attachments of clips taken from the physical newspaper.

These story portfolio files should be submitted with your application and statement.

By submitting an application, I certify that all of the information contained in the application and statement are truthful and accurate.

By submitting an application, I hereby authorize the Department of Student Media and/or the Division of Student Affairs to distribute the information contained herein as part of the scholarship selection process.

By submitting an application, I hereby grant the Department of Student Media and/or the Division of Student Affairs full and complete authority to obtain additional employment and academic information in order to verify eligibility.

By submitting an application, I further agree to permit the Department of Student Media and/or the Division of Student Affairs to utilize any information, including photos, for the purpose of marketing and promoting the Loyolan Merit Scholarship Program.

I understand that if I am selected the Los Angeles Loyolan Merit Scholarship, I am expected to serve on Los Angeles Loyolan newspaper staff in a leadership capacity for the entirety of the scholarship term.

Criteria for selection will be determined by the Senior Vice President of Student Affairs or his or her designee.

This scholarship is specifically designed not to impact any other need- or merit-based aid a student may have obtained through the Loyola Marymount University Financial Aid office.
