Scholars are accepted into the program by nomination from journalism faculty and campus media advisers, editors of newspapers or leaders of minority journalism associations. Students also may apply directly to the program, with letters of endorsement from editors or educators. College juniors, seniors or graduates with journalism majors or career goals in newspapers are eligible.

Nominees must complete an application and submit

1. resume
2. transcripts (unofficial)
3. a half-dozen work samples
4. two letters of recommendation
5. a color headshot photo
6. an essay (of no more than two type-written pages) stating why they want to be a journalist

All nominees must have a valid driver’s license and a car with insurance during their internship.

Program timetable

Spring program
Nomination deadline is Oct. 15 (postmarked). Orientation will be in mid-January, followed by a 10- to 12-week paid internship. Attendance at orientation is mandatory.

Summer program
Nomination deadline is Oct. 15 (postmarked). Placement notifications begin as early as mid-December and continue through the end of April. Orientation will be in mid-May, followed by a 10- to 12-week paid internship.
